How many of you struggle to find a good writing program for your kids? I have struggled finding a good program that taught fine motor coordination; another one for basic phonics and letter sounds; one for letter formation and I think you probably understand. I have used many resources that are good, but I wanted one that combined all the basics together under one program.
Trisha Gilkerson, author of Write Through the Bible, was asked to write a version for the younger kids. She answered these numerous requests with Write Through the Bible Junior. Trisha has taken everything I was looking for in a program and made the perfect combination!
This program was specifically designed to allow parents integrate several subjects into one:
- Fine motor coordination
- Basic phonics/letter sounds
- Letter Formation
- Bible memory
- Biblical study
The age range for Write through the Bible Junior is 4-6 years old. However, age is a recommendation as only we know our child’s abilities. Some children are ready to begin this program at a younger age, especially if the child has an older sibling. For example, my youngest son began listening to my middle son’s lessons and was ready to read and write at age 3. The great thing about this resource is that you can take as much time as you need for each letter. If a child isn’t ready to move on, keep going over it. There isn’t a set speed that you have to keep up with. If you do the lessons 4 days a week, it should take you approximately 31 weeks to finish the program.
If you’re a parent who has multiple ages, the kiddos who are not quite ready to write can begin scripture memorization. We began scripture memorization with each of our boys at age 2 and in AWANA at age 3.
How we used this?
The book we chose was Write Through the Bible Junior, KJV, Ball-and-Stick Version. I picked this particular one because I wanted my youngest, who is now 6, to use this for his writing curriculum. He had finished his previous one prior to our move, so this came at a perfect time!
This book is based on Philippians 2:1-18. The entire chapter of Philippians 2 is typed out on page 6 allowing you and your child can read it together. Then it has the ball and stick letters for your child to reference.
Each week begins by focusing on a certain group of scriptures from Philippians 2. Week one focuses on Philippians 2:1-2. Each week also has instructions for parents.
As an example, here are the instructions for week 1:
- Read Philippians 2:1-2
- Show – Using a diagram, show the child how to properly form the letter .
- Practice Tracing
There are instructions each day of every week. I really like the layout. I am impressed how it takes the guess-work out of what I am supposed to do. Honestly, as a homeschool mom with three kids in various education ranges, I appreciate a program that makes it so much easier! Another thing a busy homeschool mom appreciates is when she can combine several subjects into one program. Trisha has done a wonderful job with this.
Write Through the Bible Junior is so well done that even though I was given a copy of the ball-and-stick to review, I ordered a copy of the cursive so that my middle son could use it while learning cursive. You can order Write Through the Bible HERE & HERE.
