Have you ever wondered what makes Jesus the MOST important person who has ever lived? Have you tried explaining it to your children? Do they understand? Even if they do, have you wished you had another resource that will teach important Biblical truths? Well, you will want to keep reading….:)
If you read my review of What’s in the Bible-Why do we call it Christmas?, you know that we are big fans of this series. The first DVD in the series begins with the very beginning of God’s word and moves forward. Each DVD thereafter moves us further along in the Bible touching on each book and events mentioned. What I appreciate so much is how Biblically sound the DVDs are. Phil Vischer is methodic and takes great care on how he approaches the subjects so that kids can understand. He also presents them in a way that keeps the kids’ interest! He puts the Biblical facts into songs, stories, and even jokes that keep the children yearning for more.
Volume 10 focuses on the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John with the emphasis, of course, being on “Jesus is the Good News!” Phil Vischer and his side-kicks Buck Denver, Sunday School Lady, The Pirate, and many more do a masterful job of touching on such important topics. I love The Gospels and am glad that they didn’t fail to touch on the 400 years in between the Old Testament and the New Testament. More importantly, they talk about Jesus’ life on earth.
I thoroughly enjoy watching What’s in the Bible Volume 10. I have learned valuable information and excellent ways to present God’s Word to children. The information that is presented and the way it is presented allows children to learn important historical information. My kids are much more Biblically informed than I was at their age. I credit some of that to this series!
Phil said something that struck a chord with me in the DVD. He said, “In order to understand the Old Testament, we must look THROUGH the New Testament BACK to the Old Testament.” His statement seems simple enough, but it was so profound. What a new way of looking at how to understand the Bible! I have attended church all my life, and I will be honest, my Bible knowledge has grown enormously since I had children. More specifically, my knowledge has grown since I began homeschooling them. I credit resources like What’s in the Bible for leading and helping me to “train up my children in the way they should go.” Hearing the above quote was a great resource for me to hold on to for when I explain to my children or to a non believer. It is also a tool I can share with my kids for understanding the Bible better.
Have you wondered why neither Matthew nor Luke begin with the birth of Christ? Although I knew they didn’t, but hadn’t given it much thought. Well, in the DVD Phil explains this. Matthew begins with the genealogy of Christ. Luke begins with the birth of John. Again, I knew how each Gospel began, I just never pondered why these two didn’t begin with the birth of Christ. Phil did an amazing job presenting these facts. While he was teaching, the DVD took a more serious turn and even the puppets and other characters got quiet. My boys also became more quiet as to not miss what Phil was teaching.
Phil also did an excellent job presenting Passover. He explained, “To the Jews there is Passover. To us we take communion.” In a communion we break bread that represents the body of Christ that was sacrificed on the tree for our sins. The cup represents the blood. Jesus was Jewish. He came to earth as a baby and he grew up and preached the word of God to the lost. He was the sacrificial lamb. His blood took away our sins, thus making Him the New Covenant, which is the New Testament. Isn’t that amazing? Jesus IS the Good News!
Parents, I highly encourage you to buy the ENTIRE set of What’s in the Bible DVDs for your kids. With Christmas coming, what an amazing gift! There is nothing more perfect than God’s Word! If you cannot get the entire set, I definitely recommend Volume 10 as a start! After all, the most important message is that Jesus IS the Good News!
