Why We Shouldn’t Compare Ourselves To Others
When we compare ourselves to others it leaves us feeling less than, unworthy, and just not good enough. It can be very destructive and the Bible shares over and again that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others. We also might feel envious, jealous, develop anger, greed and a lot of other negative feelings.
That moment we begin comparing ourselves, whether it be our looks, position at a job, weight, or a myriad of other reasons, our mind becomes clouded (Galatians 1:10). Instead of seeing all the blessings in front of us that God has bestowed (Romans 12:2), we are filled with anything but.
Comparing ourselves to others prevents us from focusing on God’s plan for our lives and instead we focus on wanting to be someone else.
God has blessed me with special gifts and talents just as God has blessed you with special gifts and talents. Therefore, we have to be open to being us so we can do God’s work properly. When we become content and happy with who we are we will find healing, peace, joy, a thankful heart and true happiness.
When you start to feel doubt or comparison creeping in, remind yourself of your strengths. You are strong, smart and talented. Maybe you are really good at your job or you have a giving heart and love to serve others.
Just remind yourself of all the amazing gifts and talents that God has given you. If you need help, ask God to reveal and remind you of your strengths (1 Corinthians 12: 4-7).
Examine Your Life
Take a moment and stop and exam your life. Do you find that you are envious of others for their home, family, position, car, or career? If you find yourself becoming envious, you can begin working in those areas in your life to overcome.
By learning to be happy with what you have and reading scriptures on being content, it can begin to open your eyes to all the amazing blessings around you that make your life perfect.
We each have a gift from God. Work on trying to find what God has blessed you with for this world. Is it to help others in need? Blessed with a voice to speak or sing His Word? Whatever it is do it with passion.
No matter how small we think we are, the Bible gives us numerous examples how God used the weakest or less likely people to make a difference. You can be that difference if you focus.
Enjoy The Journey
We are blessed with this life and we have to be grateful and enjoy the journey. Jesus died on the cross so that we could walk in peace under His unconditional love.
You get to choose if you want to wake up and make today great, or would walk around disgruntled and have a bad attitude. When we put on the full armor of God we can conquer anything in our path.
Focusing on our journey and making each day count keeps our minds occupied and can help us to remember it isn’t about others – it is about you. What journey has God planned for your life?
When we find ourselves struggling on comparing, turn to the Bible. God’s words on those pages are life. If we walk in them, lean on Him, we will become stronger and learn to love right where we are at.
I have some scriptures below that are a great reminder that we shouldn’t compare ourselves, because God doesn’t make mistakes. In order to reach our full potential, we have to be focused and listen to what He is calling us to do.
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:33-34
