My boys get excited when they hear the word “science.” They enjoy anything related to the subject and are eager to learn. When the review for Visual Learning Systems came around, stating they were excited is putting it mildly. We were blessed to have access to review Digital Science Online: Elementary Edition (Grades K-5). Included in this resource is an option to also use Digital Science Online: Secondary Edition (Grades 6-12). Technically, we were not supposed to review the older grades, but by error we reviewed the Secondary Edition as well. I will share more on that in a moment.
So what exactly is Visual Learning Systems? This is a digital high quality online science curriculum whose goal is to educate your kiddos through the beauty and art of videos, graphics, and animation! When you purchase the digital version you get access to an annual online subscription. Each video also has teachers packets where you can print worksheets and other useful information for you, the teacher to be able to present to your students. I have to say that the videos are extremely well done! My kids learned so much in just the little time that we have been blessed with this curriculum. The videos also meet state and national standards, so you will have that base covered. Oh! Another benefit that I almost forgot to mention is that it works with devices that we already had! No longer are we hampered by using one computer. We were able to use this curriculum on the iPad and Kindle! Are you a parent on the go? No problem as long as you have connectivity to wifi or have connectivity through your mobile subscriber.
Visual Learning Systems also has a DVD program that has videos ranging in time from 10-20 minutes. The DVDs include vocabulary, educational slides, questions, a glossary, and much more for a very low price! You can go HERE for more information if that is something you would be interested in.
So how did we use the program?
When I received the login information, we were still moving into our new home. If you’re one of the lucky parents who have experienced the overwhelming satisfaction of moving into a new home with three boys, ranging in age between 6 and 11, you’ll know the only thing overwhelming about moving in is the stress and mayhem caused from boredom..LAC! (Laughing And Crying). What better way to entertain the kids while I unpacked boxes than with something new and something educational, right?! I figured this to be a win-win! The kids got to learn about science while Mommy got to dig though the mounds of boxes (did I mention that we had 144 boxes of books alone?). Shew! I did sit with the kids for a lot of the videos and really enjoyed them myself! They were broke down to where it was easy for my younger ones to learn, yet they were not dulled down. They really enjoyed everything about the videos. Here are some of our favorite videos:
- What is a Reptile
- Migration and Hibernation
- What is a Fish
- Features of Fish
- Exploring Freshwater Biomes
- Simple Animals
- Complex Animals
- Electrical Circuits
- Everyday Simple Machines
- Magnets and Electromagnetism
- Investigating Mixtures, Solutions, Elements, and Compounds
Earlier I mentioned that we did end up reviewing High School level by mistake. One evening, while I was fixing dinner, my younger two boys were watching some of the videos on my laptop. I was listening to the videos along with them, not realizing they had clicked on the Secondary Edition. At the end of the lesson, a series of questions are asked. Somewhat like a check on learning, if you will. The boys (ages 6 and 8) were answer the questions immediately and correctly! By the time I realized they were on the Secondary Edition, all I could do was laugh. They were obviously enjoying it, learning, and paying attention!
I am so excited that we were blessed with a year of this program! I highly recommend this product. Even now as boxes are mostly unpacked and life is returning to normal, we will be traveling a bit during April after my husband returns. You can believe I will be continuing to use Visual Learning Systems Digital Science Online for my boys!
This would make a great stand alone science program, but also a great addition to a program you may already be using. The digital videos and lessons will make a great supplement to any program!
