Bacon grease is my favorite for seasoning my cast-iron skillet, but there are lots of ways to use bacon grease in your diet. Everything from sweet to savory can be enhanced with the taste and health properties of bacon grease.

Okay, let’s just get the obvious out-of-the-way, shall we? Bacon grease is a great way to combine fats with vegetables – which is absolutely necessary in helping your body break down and use those nutrients found in vegetables.
To sautee veggies in bacon grease, add 2 Tablespoons of grease to a skillet over medium heat and let melt completely before adding in the veggies and cooking until softened.
Bake in the Bacon Fat
Rendered bacon fat can be used as a substitute for butter or shortening in almost any baking recipes. Bacon fat scones, cookies, cakes, pie crusts – the sky is the limit.
Yes, you read that right. Baconnaise – substitute the oil in a homemade mayonnaise recipe with bacon grease for a delicious and healthy alternative.
(A typical homemade mayo would be composed of 2 egg yolks, 2-3 teaspoons lemon juice and 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard)
Bacon Salad Dressing
Now that you’ve made your own baconnaise, adding a bit of it to creamy salads – like a traditional potato salad, broccoli salad or coleslaw – is a delicious way to unlock those nutrients.
Instead of popping your popcorn in butter or oil, gently add some popcorn kernals to bacon fat for a delicious movie night treat. (Approximately 1/2 cup of kernals to 2 Tablespoons bacon grease)
Bacon BBQ Sauce
This recipe is an excellent example of how you can add bacon flavor to just about any homemade BBQ sauce, naturally.
Bacon Ice Cream
And you thought bacon fat cookies were as good as it gets – you can render bacon fat to be used in an amazing and unexpected ice cream, like this one.
Bacon Tortilla Chips
Add 2 tablespoons of bacon fat to a skillet and use a pizza cutter to slice a stale tortilla into triangles. Add them the hot skillet and fry on each side for a minute until puffy, then turn.
If desired, season before they cool for a fun twist on tortilla chips.
Those following a Keto-diet will already know the delicious little beauties, which you can also make with bacon! Substitute the butter or mayonnaise in your favorite recipe with either bacon fat or baconnaise, respectively.
If making your own homemade pasta sauce (anything from al fredo to tomato), use some bacon fat when cooking the vegetables or making the roux. It will add a slightly smoky undertone.
Same as when you’re making homemade sauces, use the bacon grease to help sautee any veggies in a soup base for an easy way to sneak in a couple of tablespoons. Remember, more is more when it comes to bacon grease.
To Reheat Meat
Some people can’t stand the idea of leftovers, but try gently coating your leftover meat with a bit of bacon grease before reheating and you’ll be a leftovers convert! (This method works in the microwave or oven.)
As a Spread
After making toast, or just about anything you would normally smear butter on, use a bit of rendered bacon grease instead.
