Well, as y’all know, this year is VERY important! The United States Presidential election is right around the corner! In honor of election year, I am excited to take you inside HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections from Home School In The Woods!
I have heard about Home school in the Woods from numerous friends, but I have never tried it myself. This company is popular in homeschool circles, especially concerning lapbooking. I must admit, lap booking was intimidating to me. It seemed like a lot of work and time was something I wasn’t willing to sacrifice for something that seemed time consuming.
An opportunity presented itself for me to review Home school in the Woods Election Series. It was time to pull up my big girl pants and dive in. The presentation of the material far exceeded my expectations. The material came in a detailed file, including instructions on how to use the files! The instructions were a game changer for me. The intimidations I once felt was gone and I could see how easy this curriculum was to implement. The Election Series is packed with information, but the directions included makes it abundantly clear how to teach the kiddos. The file included in the package was full of fun-filled educational materials such as notebooking pages, copywork, vocabulary and definitions, coloring, drawing, research and so much more!
Each of the Elections packets includes:
Definition of “Election”
Different Forms of Government
The American Experiment
The Three Branches of Government
Who Do We Vote For?
Terms of Office
A “Handful” of Political Parties
Caucuses & Primaries
The Presidential Campaign: Platform
The Presidential Campaign: Stump Speaking
The Presidential Campaign: Media — News Source
The Presidential Campaign: Campaign Advertising — Spreading the Word!
The Electoral College
The Electoral Race!
I have browsed through other lapbooking curriculums in the past and each one has a common theme: too much! There is either too much information that makes it seem impossible to include in our homeschool schedule or it is packed with too much useless information that we are left scrambling to find more information to add. Home school in the Woods Election packets are balanced evenly!
How did I use this curriculum?
I agreed to this review with my oldest in mind. Bookworm is very interested in politics and watches the debates from both parties. Needless to say, this curriculum came at a great time! While he has a great knowledge for his age (his doctor was flabbergasted about the knowledge he has about politics!), he also needed to learn the political jargon and terminology, but also diving head first into the branches of government. Instead of incorporating the lapbook, we decided to incorporate a binder. This way, he would be able to keep it and build upon it throughout the year as the debates continue during the election process. Of course, my two younger boys couldn’t be left out. They listened to the audio lessons and participated in the classroom discussion. They did everything my oldest did except the binder. Although they don’t have the same knowledge or enthusiasm as my oldest, this curriculum has sparked an interest in the younger two concerning politics and the election process! Score!!!
Some of the benifits of Home school in the Woods:
- Minimal Preparation
- Great Textual Content
- Easy to Adapt
- Suits Multiple Ages
We absolutely loved this curriculum! My oldest now has a wonderful tool to guide him during the election process, whether federal, state or local!
