Y’all know that I have written a lot about the Robertson family this past year. I first met Korie back in February when I attended the Heart to Home Conference in Monroe, Louisiana, where I spent the weekend with much of the Robertson family. Korie spoke a lot that weekend about her book Strong and Kind and I knew right away that I wanted to read it.

Since I have developed a bit of a personal relationship with many of America’s favorite Duck Family, I am able to give a little more insight into them. Millions of people around the world have watched Duck Dynasty. In fact, John Luke and Mary Kate’s wedding was their highest rated show. Who can resist a good wedding, especially with the Robertson crew?!
(The above pictures I took at the Dove Awards :))
Willie and Korie’s parenting style, while not mistake proof, is something to be admired. All of their kids have a very deep, strong and personal relationship with the Lord. What I admire about the Robertson family isn’t their fame, although they have done very well for themselves. It isn’t their picture perfect life that seems to have no outward mistakes. The Robertson women are beautiful! They really are, inside and out! However, what I admire the most in this family is that they do not hide behind a picture perfect life, one that appears flawless on the outside.
This past weekend on the Duck Commander Cruise, Clay and I attended Alan and Lisa’s wedding seminar. They began the lesson by pouring out all the mistakes they have made over the years of their life and their marriage. Drugs, drinking, premarital sex, pregnancy, abortion, and the list continues. They said that they started with all of the bad stuff to show you an example of what not to do, but also to begin the seminar by being transparent in order to connect with each person attending. I admire how the Robertsons have not held back on letting everyone know that they are NOT picture perfect. They have shared with the world their sins and struggles. They are real, they are transparent, and they are relatable. That is what I love the most about them. They are the a perfect example of grace and forgiveness in Christ, one he offers to each of us!
When they have an event that I get to cover or a book that I can review, I jump at the chance. Korie’s latest was no exception.
So what is Strong and Kind about?
Here is what Amazon says:
“It’s never been more important to teach your children well. What America needs today are parents who don’t just say they value these virtues but who live them and passionately and boldly teach them to their children. It’s up to me and you, and every parent in America to make the necessary changes to give our kids the opportunity to change the world. We do that by instilling good character traits in them so that they will be capable of being the adults our world needs – Korie Robertson. Many parents want to see positive character traits in their children but wonder how to instill them. As stars of the hit reality-TV show Duck Dynasty, Korie and Willie Robertson receive loads of letters and messages from fans asking how they’ve raised such good kids. As they will tell you, ‘it isn’t always easy, but raising kids with good character is possible.’ A straight-forward, practical approach to parenting, Strong and Kind helps you identify the character traits you want to see in your children and gives you the tools for putting them in place. Besides strength and kindness, other character traits include Self-Control, Honesty, Compassion, Patience, Joyfulness, Loyalty, Humility. By modeling positive attributes, with confidence, consistency, creativity, unity, and in truth and love, you can increase the chances of your kids catching on. At the end of the day, the Duck Dynasty stars say the most important thing you can do for your children is what they do at the end of every episode: hand them over to God in prayer. Flap Copy: What Legacy Will You Pass Down To The Next Generation? ‘After being a parent for twenty years, I have come to believe that the most important thing for parents to decide-more important than bottle or breastfeeding, more important than co-sleeping or sleep training, and even more important than whether to put your child in day care or become a stay-at-home parent – is what values are important to your family and how you will go about instilling those values in your children.’. Strong and Kind Korie Robertson – with the help of her mom, Chrys Howard, and with insights and stories from her husband, Willie – introduces nine character traits that children need in order to lead a successful life. And though there are no perfect parents or perfect children, Korie shares principles-based on biblical wisdom and time-tested practices-that will help you parent your own one-of-a-kind child.”
Reading Korie’s book, I can imagine her sitting there with me just pouring out her parenting advice. I have personally watched Willie and Korie practice what is preached in this book. They didn’t write a book filled with fluff in order to garner more attention. They actually live out the principles that they speak about in the book. Korie shares the principles that she chose to focus on in her family. She encourages the reader to pick two and focus on those. This was such a new concept for me. When we think of the list of character traits that we want to instill in our kids, we tend to have a massive list! It feels so incredibly overwhelming, doesn’t it? By focusing on only two, it doesn’t feel so undoable. The one thing that stood out to me in this book is that we as parents must model the behavior that we want our children to exhibit. At the end of the day, if we are not modeling the very character traits we want our kids to possess, they will model the very ones we do NOT wish them to.

In Strong and Kind, you will find three different sections. The first one explains more of the whys of character. Why is character important? Identifying Character Traits. How to parent with those traits in mind. The second part of the book highlights different character traits. In addition to strong and kind there are several other character traits that Korie focuses on. The third section focuses on giving practical advice on how to parent with those character traits in mind.
You don’t have to be a Duck Dynasty fan or to have even watched a single episode to gain a wealth of knowledge from Korie. I also want to point out that Korie is joined in this book by Chrys Howard. Chrys is Korie’s Mom and, honestly, I just love her! 2Mama (Chrys) does so much for the family and is full of wisdom! I think that every parent or grandparent would want to read this book.
