Shortly after the board game arrived, my niece came to stay with us. This visit was perfectly times as she would be able to play the game with my oldest son for this review!
About the company:
Expanders is a game brought to you by SimplyFun. This company is totally committed to bringing you educational games for your children. The age range they cover is age 3 to 103! I would dare say there is something for everyone. 🙂 Games from SimplyFun are, well, simply fun and educational! They help children to develop communication skills, math, science, and critical thinking skills. The best part about this game is kids learn while having fun! What parent wouldn’t agree that this is a win-win? The company has over 90 different products for you to choose from and many of them have won awards!
Expanders is a game that emphasizes math skills. The game centers on mathematical equations from numbers 1 through 12. Children will also work on their spacial reasoning and critical thinking skills.
The game box includes:
- 1 mainframe
- 6 double-sided circuit boards
- 2 circuit board fillers
- 4 sets of tokens (32 of each color)
- Expander token storage bag
- Rules booklet
The game is quick and easy to set up. I didn’t help my niece or son at all. The two sat down, read the instructions, and got busy! After the board is built, each player picks a pink, blue, orange or purple color token. The tokens are see through so children can see the numbers on the board. The first person to use all their tokens wins the game!
So how did we use it?
My oldest son and niece set up the game and played it several times by themselves. Then we decided to set up teams and invite my younger two boys to partake in the fun. My younger two had been asking to play, but I took it as an opportunity to help benefit my middle son. My youngest son and my niece were pitted against my two older sons. My boys are somewhat competitive. Actually, all of them do not enjoy losing at anything. But, they all had fun and played it several times by switching the teams. Honestly, they all enjoyed it more as a team than playing as a 2-player game. I also enjoyed the team version since it minimized whining! LOL!
Expanders challenged my niece and my boys as they thought their way through their moves. It kept them totally engaged. I definitely recommend this to ANYONE! I think that learning through play and fun is extremely beneficial to children!
