Review of WinterPromise Simple Machines
Recently I was asked to review WinterPromise’s Simple Machines. For some time now I had been looking for a Simple Machine Unit study. I had not been able to find one that fit our family. We are pretty busy and I had already picked out our curriculum, so this was something that needed to be able to be done easily and can fit in with our busy lifestyle. I also wanted something that could be done before we dove into our fall work.
When I first got out the program my oldest, who is a HUGE science freak, was so excited! First we paged through the books and got a feel for the program. I asked him what he thought, he loved it too!
The next day we dived in. I was doing this with multiple ages, this programs age requirements are age 4-6 grade. I was ok with that though and figured I could make at least some of the program work for my other 2. However, even though my middle child is only 6, he himself was fascinated! He sat patiently listening to the lesson and he asked questions!!!
Other then simple things that most people have around their house, we did not need to purchase anything else.
I loved that! How many times have we set out to do a study and realize, we don’t have all the things we need for the project? So we set it aside till we can run out and get the items, I usually forget and the whole thing gets forgotten. I am so thankful that when putting this together WinterPromise put so much thought into picking books and activities that were easy to have on hand.
I knew that regardless of if the little ones would get much out of the actual lesson, they would probably love the activities. I was right! When I got the stuff out for the first activity on levers, all hands were on deck! 🙂 My younger ones also really love the videos that they can watch. My oldest LOVED it all! All of my kids now have a better understanding of what simple machines are. It is truly amazing hearing your 4-year-old saying look Mommy, it’s a lever!
I would say that this programs age requirements are right with it starting for 4th grade. Some of the vocabulary is pretty advanced for younger ones. My other kids learned some vocabulary, however my oldest learned a lot! We started this program when we were in between programs for summer/fall, so I had my oldest begin learning the vocabulary for language arts.
I give this program 2 thumbs up!
So here is a list of some of my favorite things about this program….
1. WinterPromise has done all the homework for you. They have suggested books, videos, and activities that go right along with the program.
2. There is a schedule you can follow to make things even more easy to add into your other studies. We personally did not follow it to a T but it is easily tweaked to fit YOUR needs.
3. I loved how even though this was for older kids my younger kids could participate in quite a bit of it.
4. This program can easily be stretched in other ways. For example. There is listed vocabulary in each chapter. You can use this for your child’s vocabulary words, you can add in writing assignments or you can Google and dive into the internet world for even more study.
Thank you WinterPromise for allowing me the chance to review this wonderful product!
