Pippi Longstocking was one of my favorite books growing up. I was so amused by the antics that Pippi could get herself into! It was also a good clean book that a tween could read without my parents worrying about bad language, adult humor or sexually explicit content. My parents did not have to worry about their tween reading language or content that contradicted God’s Word.
I was asked to review another book by the brilliant author of Pippi Longstocking, Astrid Lindgren. Although this book is new, it’s not new. The original print is from 1956 but now we have the pleasure of it returning to print again! I would like to introduce you to (drumroll please) Rasmus and the Vagabond.
What is Rasmus and the Vagabond about?
After running away from an orphanage, nine-year-old Rasmus finds the world a cold and unfriendly place until he meets an extraordinary tramp called “Paradise Oscar.” Together they meet more adventure than they ever imagined, solve a mystery, catch the culprits, and find Rasmus a home. Astrid Lindgren, who gave the world Pippi Longstocking, sets this action-packed classic of children’s literature in the Swedish countryside before the age of automobiles. This is one book you’ll want to read more than once.
Personally, I think Astrid Lindgren is an absolutely brilliant writer! I have found all of her books to be wonderfully written! This book is no exception. Rasmus, who resides in the orphanage Vaesterhaga, watches as other kids are picked for adoption but he is always looked over. He decides to run away from the orphanage when he is 9 and finds himself lonely and sleeping in a hayloft. Soon he meets a Vagabond named Oscar. This book is full of adventure and entertainment that will keep the pages turning! My 11-year-old thoroughly enjoyed this book and, as a homeschool mom, I love that this book is a classic! I also love that it is the kind of book that actually encourages a child’s imagination and the story line is just wonderful! My 11-year-old couldn’t put it down and read the whole book in one setting!
I have read numerous books by Astrid Lindgren including Emil and Pippi Longstocking. However, I am not sure how on earth I missed Rasmus and the Vagabond. This book now has a permanent spot in our homeschool library to be read over and again as it is passed down among our boys! I give this book 5/5! It is a must have for all tweens! Suggested age is 8-12.
