How many of us homeschool parents could use a helping hand? If you said yes, I have just the thing for you – HelpTeaching.com. As a member of The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew, I was given a membership to this fantastic resource and am excited to share with you what I know!
I am a researcher by nature. I research every program, supplemental or otherwise, that I think would be of value to my children’s education. Very few things bring more satisfaction to me than seeing the results from a well laid out plan. Unfortunately, monkey wrenches get thrown into those plans and, let’s face it, life just happens. Too many times have I wished for a helping hand. That is where the Pro Plan from HelpTeaching.com came in!
Shortly after being selected for this review, I became terribly ill. I am normally the one in this house who escapes the colds and flu bugs. If my two younger boys catch so much as a cough or runny nose, they pass that along to my husband and he becomes fatally ill. However, this time I wasn’t so lucky. I couldn’t seem to get rid of the symptoms no matter how hard I tried. Yet, there was no substitute teacher to come in and help me with schooling the kids. School had to continue as I battled this sickness for over two weeks!
So, who ya gonna call? Not Ghostbusters… 🙂 I called on Help Teaching! Honestly, I suddenly felt as if a really good substitute teacher jumped into my computer and had it all figured out. She even told me to take a nap! Okay, I made up that last part. Raising a middle school child is hard enough, but having him skip out on lessons as I’m inundating myself with vitamin C was not an option! Also, my younger two boys seem to get very, uh, busy without something to keep them occupied. The program was super helpful!
The site offers so much information and help that it literally can help you teach anything! It offers lesson plans for grades k-12 and takes the guess-work out. The program uses their own videos as well as videos that link to other sites such as Kahn Academy. You will find worksheets, tests, answer keys and much more!
How did we use it?
I spent some time familiarizing myself with the website and different programs. I am not a big fan of younger kids spending too much time in front of a screen, so I printed worksheets for my younger two to use. I was able to stream the videos through my SmartTV as I was continuing to fight the sickness that was knocking me down. This worked out so well for all my kids and got us through such a hard time! I was very grateful for this program. I plan to continue using this resource when I need help planning lessons or if I just want to add in a supplemental lesson. There wasn’t enough material for this program to be the end-all for curriculum. However, it is a fantastic resource for supplement or for those times when we just need a helping hand in planning our lessons.
The las thing I would like to add is that both English and Math have common core standards aligned worksheets available. This has been a really big issue for many homeschoolers, including myself, so I didn’t want you to be surprised. However, most of the worksheets weren’t too overbearing or common core confusing for my preference.
