Modest Movie And Television Choices
The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Matthew 6:22-23
Last week in my Modest Monday post I talked about Modesty and Our Music. My heart this week has been led to speak about Modesty and Our Movie and Television Choices. Hollywood is really good at putting a ribbon around sin and calling it great entertainment. Many of these movies and television shows look innocent enough, but are they really innocent?
I posted HERE a little about this topic, but really feel the need to speak out some more. In the last several years it seems families have moved away from meaningful entertainment to electronic babysitters. Keep those tomatoes at bay. I enjoy a good movie and I like good clean shows that my kids can watch. I’ll even admit that I am thankful for electronics at times. Anyway, as I was saying, I have noticed the switch. Kids used to read instead of sitting in front of the television. They used to go outside and play with the neighborhood kids or their siblings. Families played board games together and spent time together AND they enjoyed it!
The shift now has went to video games, computer games, movies, television and the latest gaming app. I’m not saying that all these are bad. There are good, wholesome, Christian entertainment that is readily available at our fingertips. However, what I’m getting at, is that these latest addictions to electronics have made it easier to get sucked into sins. We get sucked in through advertisements and commercials. We get sucked in through our family, friends and acquaintances. We decide to watch a movie, or a tv show, or play a game because it is the latest craze or it happens to be topping the box office. We eventually begin watching or playing these forms of entertainment that do not honor the Lord, even mock him and take his name in vain to movies that do much of the same. My friends we have to stay vigilant and honoring in our choices.
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
The entertainment industry is huge. Top films gross millions of dollars and so do video games. Television shows and radio stations broadcast to millions of people. You have to be alert. There are wolves in sheep clothing everywhere. Here is an example recently. My husband was out and about listening to a local CHRISTIAN radio station last week. The station was advertising a commercial about the Noah movie. Now this film is one of the most ungodly movies ever made. It is a complete mockery of God and his word. I can’t say anything good about this movie except maybe there was an Ark in it and animals. No, I didn’t see it either but I know folks who did and felt dirty afterwards. Anyway, this radio station was really hyping up this movie talking about how Christian it was and people should go see it! Despite the fact that the producer himself was bragging about how ungodly the movie was AND how Christians just “need to get over it.”
I see friends posting all the time or hear them talking about how wonderful this show is or that show. Most of the time I have NO idea what they are talking about because we don’t watch very much TV; and when we do, we are pretty picky normally. Friends what goes in is what comes out. If we are listening to shows with curse words, eventually that is what is going to come out. If we are listening to shows that take God’s name in vain, eventually it will not seem important for us to stand with the Bible and keep his name pure. I believe that many Christians now who watch shows and movies with constant bad language has just heard it so much they are immune to it. If we were to go to a job interview or have a conversation with our Lord and Savior, how would we act? Would we curse and take his name in vain? I would like to assume not, so why is it okay to listen to it on TV or in a movie? Did you ever notice in old TV shows and movies, back in the Golden Age of entertainment when the church had more influence over the content of movies, actors, and actresses, that they had to communicate their emotions through good acting, NOT cheap laughs and cursing?
Here is a quote by the late Dr. D. James Kennedy. He once pointed out that when an actor portrays a murderer, he is not actually sinning, because he’s not actually killing. When he portrays someone committing adultery, the actor is only portraying sin, but not actually doing it. Yet when an actor takes God’s name in vain, he is sinning per se. He is violating God’s law.
What about how women and even men dress on movies and shows? Nowadays it is a huge push for acceptance in gender neutrality. I could go back to the Golden Age of entertainment again when ladies dressed as ladies. When men dressed as gentlemen. I miss that don’t you? If they aren’t trying to remove gender, then the push is to be “sexy”. This is wrong and sinful. It is not wrong ladies to be sexy for your husband, be sexy all you want in your bedroom! 🙂 It is a sin though to dress sexy with the thought of attracting attention. We are to adorn ourselves in modest apparel and we cannot do that if we are worried about bringing “sexy” back! What is this teaching our children or our teens? What is this showing our brothers in Christ? We are not to be a stumbling block; yet the TV and movie screen are full of them.
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28
Moms, are you screening what your kids are watching? Are their picks of shows edifying to the Lord? Even teens need guidance in this. Are you also watching shows you shouldn’t watch? One thing we decided was that if we couldn’t or shouldn’t watch it in front of the kids, then we don’t generally watch it alone. The exception to this are movies like Le’ Miserable which is not per say a bad movie, they just have not reached the age yet to understand the content.
Televisions and movie theaters/DVDs are not bad, but when used wrong they can become and idol and yes, they can become bad. How is your TV being used? What about your movie choices? I would love to hear your standards in this area!!!
Here are some final thoughts and a video:
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2
Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. Romans 13:13-14
So what did I wear? This is what I wore to worship last Sunday:
