One of the questions that I get a lot from Homeschool parents is about handwriting and wondering what we use. Well, we have tried different ones over the years and recently I was asked to review Memoria Press New American Cursive Penmanship Program Workbook 1!
I have to say that over the years we have tried various things for handwriting but had not yet tried anything from Memoria Press. Personally, I love Memoria Press. We are currently using a few of their other resources in our homeschool and LOVE them! Just a quick side note, their geography program AND their Christian studies program is WONDERFUL!!! We also LOVE their excellent studies on books!!! Currently Bookworm is going through Robin Hood and he is learning so much!
Ok back to handwriting. 🙂 My middle son had not yet learned how to write in cursive, so when this review came up I jumped on it! When we got the book he was SO SO SO excited!
He told me Mommy, you mean I get to learn to write like a big boy? Clay was still overseas when this came and he wanted to write in “squiggle” letters like Daddy.
How we used it?
Well we just added it right in with our regular seat work. I sat down with him as we began. He was introduces to Mr. Meerkat. Mr Meerkat is a character who appears throughout the book to help kids learn how to hold their pencil correctly, proper posture for writing, how to correctly place your paper to make handwriting easier AND neater, he also helps the kids to understand how to make the strokes and letters! TurtleBoy, who is 8 has absolutely LOVED this program. He hasn’t fussed about doing the lessons, he hasn’t cried. There has been nothing but joy out of him in learning how to write in cursive. I am so excited for him! We are not 100 percent finished with this book BUT I already bought the next level to have on hand because soon he will finish. He has done a fantastic job and I know that if the program had not been so well done that he could have struggled.
When I introduced my oldest to cursive I know that we had some struggles, still do and that he cried more tears than he had smiles. I am actually going to send my oldest through this program again to fine tune his cursive writing and brush him up on his strokes.
One of the things in the book that I really loved too outside of the actual program itself WHICH I LOVE, is the section called “Why Teach Cursive Writing?” It goes through the importance why you should even teach your kids cursive to begin with. I am a FIRM believer that cursive should still be taught to kids. It was very comforting to see this in the book.
I have enjoyed this program a lot! So if you’re looking for a new handwriting program for teaching cursive, look no further then Memoria Press New American Cursive Penmanship Program Workbook 1!
