I remember helping my grandparents and my mom make apple butter every year. We would can so many jars that we had enough to give away to the neighbors. My Dad had a large kettle for outside it was the best! We also made a lot of apple sauce that my Grandma helped my mom prepare. As Mom and Dad got older, they rarely pulled out that big copper kettle, so Mom began making apple sauce and apple butter in the crock pot. It’s a recipe that I still use to this day just adapted since I don’t have that large copper kettle for canning!

I also make blueberry butter, strawberry butter, raspberry butter, blackberry butter and if you name a fruit, I can probably make a butter out of it & then can it! Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes. There is something about homemade recipes to get the taste buds hopping and the memory that will last a lifetime! I can still remember after all these years where I was when I first tasted homemade apple butter. Homemade recipes also requires ingredients that you know exactly where they come from. If you’re like me, you find yourself on Google looking up an ingredient that’s difficult to pronounce that you read on the back of a can or a box, which making our own food usually prevents.

Ingredients-

6-8 apples
1/2 cup water
1 tsp cinnamon (options and can use less if desired)

Servings: Makes about 3 cups apple sauce so if you want more- double the recipe.

Directions:

1) Dice the apples into cubes and throw away the core. Apples can be peeled if desired, but it is not necessary.

2) Add the apples, water, and cinnamon to the Instant Pot. 1/2 cup water is plenty of water to come to pressure, adding more water will cause the apple sauce will be thin.

Close the lid and turn the pressure valve to sealing. Cook on high pressure using manual for 5 minutes. Let pressure release naturally.

3) Now that the apples are cooked you can turn them into sauce two ways. You can either mash the apples and liquid with a potato masher, or mix them in the blender. A potato masher works best for peeled apples and a chunkier apple sauce. This is the one that I have-

A blender or mixer will make it pureed. Let cool and serve. Store in the refrigerator.

Tip: Store apple sauce in popsicle storage bags for an easy to-go option. We love-making a large batch of apple sauce and storing them in the popsicle bags. We freeze half, and put the rest in the refrigerator. When the fridge stash is gone, I pull some from the freezer and let it defrost in the fridge. Here are the bags I suggest-
