When we first began homeschooling I stumbled across Horizons Math. Okay, so I didn’t actually “stumble.” I stalked The Old Schoolhouse Facebook page back in those days to watch for reviews on curriculum. As I read numerous positive reviews about Horizons curriculum, I knew there had to be something really special about the Math curriculum!!!
Not only as homeschoolers, but also as parents invested in our children’s future, we know how important it is to have a good foundation in math. Starting your kiddos out on a path in math is extremely important! This was also important to my husband who is the math wiz in the family. He urged me to focus on reading and math when our oldest was in Kindergarten. We began with the Horizons Level K Math Curriculum. I can not tell you how fantastic this resource has been with not only my oldest, but also our younger children as well! The curriculum was clearly laid out and made teach math extraordinarily easy! We were so impressed with Horizons Math curriculum that we decided to move to Math 1 the following year for my oldest. Needless to say, we have remained with Horizons throughout the years. Not only has my oldest enjoyed this curriculum, he has thrived in this resource.
For the purpose of this review, bear with me as I review Horizons 1st Grade Math!
Here is a bit of background. Horizons Math is part of Horizons Christian Homeschool Curriculum. Horizons Math is a straight of out the box curriculum. This means you can open the box and go! There really is not an extreme amount of prep work required. You will also find a list of items needed to complete activities in the lessons. Normally these are easy-to-find items found around your home. Also included in the curriculum are two workbooks – Book 1 and Book 2. Finally, you will also receive the Teacher’s Guide. The teacher’s guide has a detailed list of extra manipulative used to enhance the math lessons. Extra practice sheets are included in the teacher guide as well.
The student guides are wonderful! These guides are bright and colorful and draw the kids into the lessons. Each lesson is long enough to ensure proper practice, but short enough to keep the kids attention. You will find instructions on new concepts and practice in each lesson as well as a review from previous lessons. The reviews overlap so children are able to retain more information. This has been extremely helpful in ensuring mastery of a particular concept.
Before I continue, let me be crystal clear. It is easy to allow your child complete the student workbooks without using the teacher guide. I urge you to not do this!! The teacher’s guide contains concepts, facts, and rules that are needed to ensure your child understands the math terms and problems. If you skip the teacher’s guide, as tempting as it can be, your child will definitely be missing out on key concepts, math facts, and will not gain the full benefit from this curriculum.
The teacher’s guide provides lesson plans, activities, manipulative, and extra practice for your kiddo. Personally, I copy the extra practice sheets at home from my printer. This way if I need more, which I usually do, the original isn’t marked up.
So how did we use it?
My middle son used this curriculum. He absolutely loves this curriculum and is excited to learn from it every day. Sometimes I have to take it away from him because he moves ahead so much. We added this right into our regular school day for him. Usually we did 4 days of math per week. Soon, 4 days turned into 5, which turned into 6, which went back to 4..LOL. He has learned so much and truly enjoys it. Once he is finished with this curriculum, we will chug right along in the next Horizons Math!
Thank you so much Horizons and TOS for this review! I HIGHLY recommend Horizons Math to everyone! 🙂
