Homeschool Field Trips in Alabama
If you have followed along I started a series this summer on Homeschool Field trips. Then I decided since we were studying about the United States this year for Classical Conversations Cycle 3, that I would take you around the US so you could learn about the field trips in your state, and others!
The great state of Alabama is a homeschool field trip paradise. You’ll find historical field trips spanning from the Civil War to Civil Rights, science field trips spanning from botanical gardens to space and artistic jaunts from the likes of the jazz hall of fame.
Check out these homeschool field trips in Alabama for a few great ideas to enrich your already strong curriculum!
Birmingham Civil Rights Museum
The Birmingham Civil Rights Museum was named one of 15 places children should visit before they turn 15 by Budget Travel magazine.
Art exhibits, traveling exhibits (like the one dedicated to the Freedom Riders and a multimedia exhibit celebrating the four little girls that died in the Sixteenth Street Church Bombing), and a rich history of civil rights in the South are what make this museum a must-see for any child and adult. After school programs are also available for students.
Ave Maria Grotto
Visit the place dubbed, “Jerusalem in Miniature.” Not only does the Ave Maria Grotto showcase mini replicas of places in the Holy City, it also displays other historic buildings and shrines from across the globe.
The brainchild of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk, this place is a learning experience filled with lessons of religion, history, and architecture.
U.S. Space & Rocket Center
Take a field trip that’s out of this world at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville. See an authentic Saturn V moon rocket and Pathfinder, explore more than 1,500 space artifacts from the United States space program, and try out the museum simulators to experience the feel of a rocket launch and the force of gravity in space.
Field trip experiences are available for larger groups, so gather your homeschooling friends or just take an informal tour and visit with your kids.
Birmingham Museum of Art
Free student-centered tours center on art appreciation, observation, reflection, creativity, and analysis. Free admission will allow you to see contemporary and historical art exhibits that rotate from around the globe.
Tour the USS Alabama Battleship to celebrate and learn about a piece of World War II History. Connect to your homeschool curriculum and go inside the ship that’s been visited by more than fifteen million people. Discounts are available for military members and their families as well.
There is so much history in the Heart of Dixie. Enjoy these opportunities for homeschool field trips in Alabama to study history, art, religion, science, and more!
