I was first introduced to Grapevine Ministries a few years ago when we used their Birth of Jesus study. This year, while studying the time period in much of the Old Testament, I decided this study series would be perfect for our family!
When visiting the Grapevine Studies website, try not to get overwhelmed! The site contains numerous studies and a variety of age ranges to fit your family best. Here is an easy guide to help you get started:
A little bit about the Old Testament study….
The course is meant to last about 12 weeks. However, if you do a lesson daily, which is easily possible, as sometimes we did, the study can be completed in approximately 45 days. This study focuses on a chronological study of Creation through Jacob.
Grapevine is known for its stick figure drawings to help reinforce what is being taught in the lessons. It makes it so much fun! My kids love doing the drawings!
The main things you will need to get started with this study is order the curriculum. If purchasing the ebooks, you will need to print the lessons prior to the start. Also, colored pencils are a great addition for your kids to draw the stick figures. Grapevine uses special color codes throughout the lessons. Finally, you and/or your child will need to have a Bible handy!
While the lessons are presented, your children listen and draw. Your kids will draw a variety of things from shapes, eyes, items representing God, people, things, and events. This concept alone is tremendously beneficial to a wiggly child. Ask me how I know. LOL!
Here are the recommendations of Old Testament Levels 1, 2 and 3:
- Level 1. Age recommendation is aged 6-8, which is usually grades 1-2
- Level 2. Age recommendation is 8-10, which is usually grades 3-4
- Level 3. Age recommendation is 10-13, which is usually grades 5-6
How did we use it?
In addition to the student ebooks, I also received a teachers manual. The teachers manual is about 98 pages long. You will be blessed with a lot of valuable information in the manual.
After I downloaded the links, I spent time looking over the teacher manual and preparing. It is not a lot of prep time, so I literally just looked through it. 🙂 However, I took time reading through their section on teaching multiple levels since I had three levels that I was going to be teaching.
We began the lessons the very next day. I started my oldest in level 3, my middle in level two and my youngest in level 1. My oldest enjoys the reading and learning new things. My middle enjoys the reading as well, but is more of a kinetic learner. He learns best by doing. My youngest is a combination of both. This study was a hit for my kids, as all previous grapevine studies have been!
We love this company AND their Bible studies! If you are still undecided, they have sample pages available HERE.
