I can hardly contain my excitement about this review!!! I have been Facebook friends with Heidi St. John from the Busy Mom blog for quite some time. Heidi is also the author of Real Life Press Firmly Planted, The Gospels Part 2. She is such a joy to speak with and such a wonderful woman of God. Have I mentioned she is looking to relocate to Tennessee in this very area? I am so excited! Anyway, when the opportunity presented itself to review her study, I immediately jumped at the chance! I LOVE her blog and her Bible studies. I knew this study would not disappoint! Before I get into the review, allow me to share a bit about us.
When we set out to homeschool six years ago, our decision wasn’t strictly for religious reasons. Schools were not as bad as they have become, common core wasn’t a topic of discussion (or disgust depending on your personal views), children were not muzzled when talking about God, praying, and read their Bibles in school. However, shortly after our decision to homeschool, I began reading homeschool blogs and diving into the Word of God. I truly believe that God called us to homeschool. I submerged myself in homeschool information. I read everything from articles to blogs to books. I prepared myself the best I could with the resources I surrounded myself with to homeschool from a Biblical perspective.
One of the many blessings of homeschooling is being able to follow Deuteronomy 6, which guides me to keep Christ at the forefront with my children. As a homeschool mom, I can tailor my children’s education around the commandments God expresses in His Holy Word. These are some of the reasons why I was so excited about this review opportunity.
I was sent a PDF copy of Firmly Planted, Gospels Part 1 and also a printed copy of Firmly Planted, Gospels Part 2. We decided to begin our studies using the printed version. Each study has 10 lessons included (I will talk more about that in a minute). The lessons are designed to last a week each. This is a family study guide that is quite different from other Bible studies you may be familiar with. What I enjoy most about this study is that we involve the entire family!
Heidi lays out the lesson so that I began with the Bible rather than a few verses or even clef notes of scripture. LOVE THAT! What better resource to begin with than the Bible when participating in a Bible study? Next, Heidi led me into “The Seed” which is the main lesson from the story in the Bible study. Then I jumped into “Planting the Seed.” In this section, Heidi had me dig a little bit deeper in to the study. “Planting the Seed” has a Bible verse that is suggested for memorization and a more in-depth study for older children and adults. All of my kids (ages 6, 8 and 11) listened and thoroughly enjoyed this section!
Included in the studies are:
1. Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23)
2. The Story of Two Sons (Luke 15:11-32)
3. Jesus and Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10)
4. The Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8:2-11)
5. The Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17-31)
6. The Triumphal Entry (Matthew 21:1-11)
7. The Last Supper (Luke 22:7-20)
8. Gethsemane (Mathew 26:36-46)
9. The Crucifixion (Mathew 27:27-56)
10. The Resurrection (John 20:1-31)
At the conclusion of the studies, Heidi has activities for both older and younger kids in the student workbook. The activities should take you the rest of the week to complete but they are so good! These activities cement the lessons presented in the studies, helps the kids to comprehend the material, and reinforces the Word for them. I really like how the workbook is arranged. Here is an example:
- Words to Remember
- Journaling pages
- Copywork for the memory verse
- Mazes (Upper & Lower ages)
- Coloring page
- Crosswords (Upper & Lower ages)
- Word Search (Upper & Lower ages)
- MUCH MUCH MORE! Each week has about 20 pages total that you can use.
This Bible study is so easy to add into your homeschool. We did this along with our homeschool studies each morning. Clay is working crazy hours, but I am working on rearranging our scheduled activities so he can partake in this study when he is home. 🙂 Heidi’s study is very flexible and doesn’t take a lot of time, yet it is packed with a lot of information to the lessons. My kids weren’t overwhelmed because the lessons are so customized. There really is something for everyone!
If you have kids like me who are very familiar with the Bible, don’t think they might get bored with this study. Firmly Planted by Real Life Press is wonderful! Don’t fret if your kiddos have heard the stories 100 times. Heidi does such a fantastic job of presenting the stories in a way that your children maintain their attention.
I HIGHLY recommend this study to any family, homeschool or not. This would be a great addition to your Bible study and family time.
