When I received an opportunity to review Introductory Science from Science Shepherd, I immediately took advantage. I have three kiddos who love learning about the world around them. They are explorers by nature. My oldest researches questions in books and the internet. My middle son is a kinetic learner and an outside the box thinker. He learns by doing. My youngest is fearless and wants to find snakes, creepy crawly things and feel the warmth of the sun on his face and the cool breeze on his fingers. I do what I can to fan the flames in their scientific minds.
All of my boys love science. They question why things are the way they are and then conduct some sort of experiment to test their hypothesis or theories. Unfortunately, we are on a break from science as we just completed our previous science curriculum. Introductory Science from Science Shepherd arrived at the perfect time. I had something new and refreshing to introduce to my boys! All three of my boys have different learning styles. One is a reader, one is a doer, and the other is a combination of both sprinkled with logic. This curriculum allows all three to learn in their style. This is a video-based curriculum combined with a workbook that follows along with the studies.
About the program
Science Shepherd was designed by a homeschool dad. He designed the program based on his personal experiences gained from home educating his children and listening to other homeschool parents. After the initial first launch of Science Shepherd, this homeschool dad saw a real need for good, complete science curriculum for all ages. On a side note, you can also check out Science Shepherd Biology Program! Introductory Science a complete science program that includes two separate levels of introductory science, Level A and Level B, recommended for ages 6 to 11! How cool is that?
Here a few topics covered in Introductory Science:
- Science Skills and Tools
- Life Sciences
- Earth Sciences
- Physical Sciences
The product I reviewed came with a workbook and answer key for Level A, which is recommended for ages 6 to 8. By age 9 (or if they complete Level A prior and you think they’re ready to move on), your kiddos move on to Level B. In our review packet, I also received a 12 month access to the online videos.
An important note regarding Science Shepherd – ALL of their lessons are Biblically based! This is an important factor for my family. However, the program does explain the theory of evolution and other touchy topic, but is explained as just that – a Theory. The curriculum then redirects the students back to the Bible and what God says.
How did we use it?
We all curled up on the living room floor and accessed the videos through our smart tv. We watched the lessons, some more than once. Each video segment is approximately 2-5 minutes in length. The next day we completed work in the workbooks. My younger two kiddos are ages 7 and 9 and they really enjoyed the videos as well as the workbooks. Because they have a firm grasp on many areas of science as well as a strong Biblical foundation, we conducted the lessons three times a week and still completed the week’s worth of lessons. The science along with the terminology my kids learned was absolutely amazing.
In week 1 of Introductory Science, creation is discussed. Where should we always begin with any lesson we teach our kiddos? Exactly where God did – In the beginning. I am glad this curriculum began with creation, but I am also glad the program discussed and explained evolution. We can not teach our kids to defend their faith unless they know what criteria will be used to attack their faith.
We enjoyed this program and are blessed to have had the opportunity to review Science Shepherd. I hope you check out this curriculum and find it as successful as I have. We haven’t completed the entire program just yet, but will probably have it finished sometime during the summer. Having said that, please excuse me while we start another Introductory Science lesson.
