I am not going to lie, as a mom, I have found some “interesting” smells lingering around our home and even vehicle on occasion. I mean from running errands, food spills, dirty laundry in the house, garbage, it adds up. When you live in an active home, you are bound to run into some unpleasant smells along the way.
I get a headache if I use the commercial air fresheners, they seem so harsh. I also don’t want to be spraying a deodorizing spray in the room that makes you feel like you can’t breathe after. I decided to make my own air fresheners using essential oils. These little mini mason jar fresheners are a perfect size! You can place them on the back of the toilet seat, in a closet, or even your car.
5 Minute DIY Mini Mason Jar Air Fresheners
The DIY air fresheners offer the perfect amount of freshness to the room, and you can choose whatever scent you like! No being stuck between an ocean breeze and overpowering cherry aroma, I got you covered. Essential oils are so popular these days, so why not utilize them in all areas from cleaning, diffusing, and using in the home.
DIY Air Fresheners Essential Oils
With these air fresheners, you are welcome to use one solid essential oil or make a blend. I have a few of my favorite essential oils and mixtures I like to use for air fresheners in our home and vehicles.
- Lemon and Lavender
- Peppermint and Lemon
- Eucalyptus and Peppermint
- Rosemary and Lemon
And the list indeed goes on and on! I just use whatever aromas that I am feeling at the moment or, what fits the season. I add some drops of each essential oil in the baking soda, stir it around, sniff and then add a little more of one oil over the other or call it good. You honestly just create a blend that fits your preference.

Baking Soda Air Freshener
I chose baking soda as my base for many reasons. Baking soda is a fantastic product to keep on hand. While it is great for baking and even cleaning, it is also a great product to use for removing odors. Unlike a room spray that just masks a smell, baking soda absorbs the odors. Because of the sodium bicarbonate, baking soda can neutralize the odors that might be lingering in your home.
Then you add in essential oils and that even adds more freshness to your home. I love using citrus essential oils during the spring and summer months, and then reach for warmer scents like cinnamon, clove, peppermint in the chillier months out of the year.
This is an amazing way to create a natural air freshener without any harsh chemicals. You know exactly what is in your room freshener!
How Long Before Odors Clear Out Of Room
Even taking a cup of plain baking soda in a shallow bowl and placing it around your room can eliminate odor. When you add in essential oils, it adds an element of fragrance that is nice. With just a basic bowl of baking soda, you could see results in around 24 hours. When you add in essential oils, you will begin to smell the oils pretty much instantly!
As the baking soda and essential oils come together to work, your area will become freshener!
Where To Place The DIY Air Fresheners
- And Anywhere Else
If you find this mix is losing scent just shake it a little to reactivate the oils. After around a month or so, just replace it with fresh oil and baking soda.
