Four years ago, when I was working tirelessly to shed my weight, I ran a Google search on “Christian Low Carb Recipes.” I stumbled upon a fascinating site called Dashing Dish! What an absolute blessing the website was to me back then and continues to be even now—four years later!
I have been so blessed by the founder of Dashing Dish, Katie Farrell, over the years. Her blog not only gives me wonderful recipes and healthy eating tips, she shares her absolute love of Jesus with all her readers. Her best tips and solutions to her readers’ struggles with food is found in God’s Word. Through her site, Katie shows us how we CAN overcome our food obsessions with Christ!
Devotions for a Healthier You is an absolutely beautiful book. The cover alone draws the reader in. Katie understands that her readers come from all different walks of life. She understands many of us struggle with not only our diet/health journey, but also our journey with Christ. In the introduction, Katie says, “I Pray that this devotional will inspire you to honor God with your body from the inside out!” Allow me to pause here for a moment. I have blogged about a lot of things over the years. As a homeschool mom, I get the struggle is real to prepare healthy meals each night. When I was at my highest weight- nearly 300 pounds, I was the queen of either fast food or hamburger helper. I wanted quick and easy. I was exhausted and felt like planning healthy meals was just too much effort. I wanted desperately to honor God in every facet of my life, but sadly I just had a difficult time connecting this honor to my diet.
After I had my weight loss surgery, many of my friends thought this sudden weight loss was a quick fix for my struggles. It wasn’t. The surgery was only the beginning of a lifetime of change for myself and my family. Immediately after my surgery, I was on a strict liquid diet. Slowly I began to add in other foods. Many of my friends would ask me what I could eat. They asked very good questions. However, what scared me the most was adding back in the foods knowing where I had just came from. My obsession for carbs pre-surgery was not a place I wanted to visit again. I knew that if I didn’t learn HOW to treat my body as a temple along with new recipes I would be setting myself up for failure.
Katie was my saving grace! I read her blog and memorized her recipes! She later introduced her first cook book called Dashing Dish which, by the way, is AMAZING!!! Even my husband, who rarely takes an interest in any of my cookbooks, has poured through this one! I now have another list of recipes that he wants me to try for him!
Next, Katie came out with Devotions for a Healthier You. Friends, this is a must have book for your library! Don’t let the title mislead you. This isn’t just a devotional, but also a cookbook! Ladies, this is truly the best of both worlds. Husbands, if you’re reading this, what better way to bless your wife?!
In the beginning of the book, Katie begins with 10 Steps to a Healthier You. After reading the introduction, I would suggest spending some time there. At the four-year mark of having my surgery and losing all of my weight, I needed to take a step back and re-evaluate some of these steps myself. So thankful for this book to help me!
The next part of the book is Prayers for Health. This ties right in with 10 Steps for a Healthier You because, let’s face it, we are nothing and can do nothing outside of Christ! Take some time to read the prayers listed. All I can say is, “WOW!” These prayers are so helpful.
Here is one of my favorites:
Instead of indulging my flesh with physical cravings, today I will work up an appetite for God’s Word. When I choose to fill up on His Word, He will satisfy me more completely than anything on this earth ever could! -Matthew 5:6
Next Katie talks about Identity Scriptures. “One of the most important things we can do for our spiritual health is to discover our true identity in Christ and see ourselves as Jesus sees us,” she says. Isn’t that so true? Katie dives in and discusses the importance of this and then gives a detailed list of scriptures to have at our finger tips. We can also write out and post these reminders around the house!
This book is beautifully presented with scriptures, inspirations and pictures throughout. It is laid out with a scripture for the day, then a devotion, a prayer and a Dash of Inspiration. Sprinkled throughout are some of Katie’s famous mouthwatering HEALTHY recipes! At the end of the book, Katie suggests one week meal plans and recipes! She has everything laid out to make it easy with pantry staples to have on hand, weekly grocery list, and an easy to follow meal plan.
I am blown away by the wonderful gift God has given Katie. She is using her gift to speak to thousands of ladies and teach them how to follow the scriptures for their body. She is also just such a sweet person with a huge heart for Jesus! I would love for all of you to buy a copy of her books, especially Devotions for a Healthier You! I am also super excited because Katie sent me an extra copy to give away here to one of my readers! WHOOHOOO!
I will be having a giveaway for this book as well. I am doing it a TAD different then I have before, so check out my Facebook page on Friday for more details!!! 🙂
