It’s been a little while since I’ve shared a Math review with y’all. Without further ado, I present to you Demme Learning and Math-U-See! I was also presented with the opportunity to review the digital packs by Demme Learning!
Let me start off with a little background. I first tried Math-U-See with my oldest about 5 years ago. I was using a math program that worked for us, but everyone was talking about Math-U-See. I took the chance and tried it out. Unfortunately, it wasn’t best suited for him, so I returned to math curriculum that worked for us. When this review was presented to me, I was torn. It didn’t work for my oldest, but would it work for my middle son?
My middle one was completing his math curriculum, so I figured I would give Math-U-See another chance. Honestly, it was perfect timing. Also, he struggles in math. There are a couple of concepts that I felt he needed a bit more practice on. When I looked over the levels for Math-U-See before picking the one I felt would work best, I noticed that the Beta Level could really help reinforce those concepts! Also, I was excited about trying a different learning method and seeing how that worked out.
Before I continue, let me tell you about the company.
Demme Learning is a family owned and operated company based out of Pennsylvania. I really like supporting family grown businesses! Demme Learning has several products that it brings parents such as Math-U-See and Spelling-U-See, which I reviewed last year HERE. Math-U-See has been around for over 20 years, so you know it is a product that has been used again and again by parents. You know that question you are asked all the time as a homeschooler, the one you have to really think about and the one that sometimes doesn’t have an easy answer. What grade is your child in? HA! That is always a good one isn’t it? Well, Math-U-See is organized into levels, NOT grades! In my opinion, this is a really good thing because some children are either behind that grade level or above that grade level. Besides, who wants to answer those aforementioned questions with “3rd grade in math, 4th grade in spelling, 7th grade in reading, 2nd grade in writing, etc.” They do this so that children can be placed on whatever level fits them best. Math-U-See is a mastery program which means that students proceed at their own pace and progress as they master the concepts.
One thing to note about Math-U-See, they have FANTASTIC manipulatives! I have been asked before if this program can be completed without the manipulatives. No, not really. Since Math-U-See is a multi-sensory program, they are essential. Using the multi-sensory approach, kids develop more concrete understandings of the concepts.
But it doesn’t stop there! Remember how I mentioned the digital packs above? Well, I had not used this before because it wasn’t around when we used the program with my oldest! I would like to take time to share how wonderful this company is and how it took learning a step father with adding the digital packs!
Let’s face it, we are all busy these days. We are on the go, traveling, sports, practices, recitals, work, and the list goes on. Not only that, our kids are in a digital generation. We have smart phones, tablets, and computers that are supposed to make our life easier. The digital packs are an enhanced version of the Instruction Packs. It is available from any browser, which means you can pretty much take it anywhere you go! Each of the digital packs include a full 12 months of instructional videos and instruction manual PDFs!!! I have shelves upon shelves of books. Do you realize how much easier this made my life? Hold on, though, I’m not done yet! You also get full access to DIGITAL manipulatives! I am a total curriculum geek, so this made me giddy happy!!!
So how did we use it?
We were sent a physical set of Level Beta Instructional Pack Math-U-See set. We also got access to Demme Learning online Level Beta. My inner curriculum geek couldn’t wait to try this with my middle child, especially since we now had DIGITAL! YAY!!!
We are waiting to have our middle son tested for dyslexia. It makes total sense based on his history. When I looked into programs for him, guess what was recommended? Math-U-See!!! This was just before I found out I was actually going to be reviewing this. I felt God was leading us. Towards the end of the last curriculum we were using with our middle one, he had become somewhat frustrated. I was praying for something different here.
I got all the new product out and told him we were trying something new. He was SO excited about the blocks! The first assignment I gave him he gladly did it! He was so happy!!! We tried the regular Instructional Pack before the Digital Pack. I wanted him to get a feel for it. I can tell you it was a hit! He completed two lessons right away and asked for a third!!!
After we got a feel for the books, we decided to jump into the Demme online program. I can tell you that this being multi-sensory makes a huge difference!
Remember how I had said it didn’t work for my oldest? Well, that is the beauty of homeschooling. Each child is different. What works for one, may not work for another. I LOVE that we can use a program that really works for each individual person. So, for my middle guy, Math-U-See and Demme Learning online is a hit! We have not completed the entire curriculum yet, but we will continue and complete it. Anytime you can take the frustration out of a learning situation and give your child what they need, you have found a winner! School and learning do not need to be frustrating for any child.
If you are looking for a program to try with your kiddos, look into Demme Learning Online and Math-U-See!
