Are you looking for an amazing way to spend time together with your family? As parents, we struggle with ways to build our child’s character without directing them in a demanding or authoritative voice. We get set in our routines – get up, brush our teeth, get dressed, eat breakfast, tackle our schedules, go on about our day – but what’s really being accomplished? Are the kids having fun? Are they building the RIGHT character?

Character builds and shapes our lives. It makes us who you are. It determines what choices we make in our lives. So, why does it feel like developing character isn’t a priority on our list? Because, frankly, it can be hard without the right tools. I’m excited to offer a tool I hope will help begin a discussion on character development with your family: The Family Honor Plate.

How can you use the plate as a parenting tool?

The plate has 9 virtues listed around the center. These virtues help remind you (yes, you mama!) every day of which traits you should showcase each day. What’s even better? These virtues represent the 9 Fruits of the Spirit! The virtues remind us how we should look upon our children. If we fall short of those virtues, they also serve as a constant reminder to improve in those areas. It’s recommended that if you do see your child showcasing one of these traits, to give them their meal on that plate for dinner and remind them (and show them) that you recognize their successes that day! By doing this, you are not only showing them that you see the positive in their life and what they are doing right, but you are also showing them that you care!

It’s a FUN homeschool activity.

It’s just like art class, but with biblical and character meaning! My kids and I had so much fun painting these plates over Thanksgiving break. We learned a valuable lesson discussing these virtues we should always strive for, discussing the fruits of the spirit, and allowing the kids to be as creative as they want to be. I was truly inspired.
