I recently discovered that December 1st is National Pie Day! Y’all, what could be better smushed between Thanksgiving and Christmas than a day that is set aside to eat pies?! However, I’m also seeing National Pie Day is also on March 14 and the official pie day is January 23. I don’t really care because any day set aside to be pie day, new or old, must be celebrated! No one seems to be able to figure out the history on how exactly the December 1st pie day got started, so lets just roll with it! While I was digging around, I discovered some interesting facts about pies and thought I would share them with you.
- Throwing a whipped cream filled pie gained popularity around 1909 when Ben Turpin received a pie in the face in the movie Mr. Flip!
- Pyes (Pies) appeared in England as early as the 12th century. During this time period, pies normally had more crust than filling.
- Pie made its way to America with the English settlers. These pies were referred to as “coffins” because the early colonists baked the pies in very long, narrow pans. Some of the English pie recipes that made their way across the ocean to America were recipes for beef, lamb, duck, or pigeon!
- After reading the last fact some of you may be wondering about the sweet pies we eat today. Well, sweet pies didn’t really surface until the late 1800’s! Pies continued to be made and loved with the ingredients that we have come to love and by the 1940’s a good pie was as American as Apple pie. 😉
So whatever pie you love – apple, cherry, pecan, berry, peach, blueberry – I hope you grab a slice and celebrate both in December and again in January and maybe even March! Also, if you really love pie, check out pie face. 😉
